We design for real learners first. We use research second - to choose formats that reduce unnecessary friction - then build useful features on top. This page explains the ideas in plain English and links the sources so you can read them yourself.
The VARK controversy
You will hear that “learning styles” are a myth - and you will also hear products promise that matching your VARK style (visual, auditory, read/write, kinesthetic) is the key to better grades. Both extremes skip the honest middle. We name the issue here so you can judge our position for yourself.
The matching hypothesis says instruction tailored to a preferred modality reliably improves learning outcomes. Careful meta-analyses that isolate true matching experiments find little or inconsistent benefit - sometimes near zero, sometimes a small effect that is not strong enough to treat style-matching as a proven instructional strategy on its own.

Our position: modality-true materials may only slightly help you “learn better” in the narrow experimental sense of matching. What they do well is help many adults - especially those fighting dyslexia, ADHD, ESL, or exam anxiety - start the path with less friction and more comfort in a format that feels native. That on-ramp matters. We then build on it with tools that have been repeatedly shown to raise retention - above all retrieval practice and spaced repetition - plus obstacle-aware reading and separate spines for written exams and oral boards.
Preferences are real. Proven outcome engines are different. We respect the first and invest hardest in the second.
Practice that sticks
Decades of learning science favor retrieving information (quizzing yourself) and spacing that practice over time - far more than re-reading or highlighting alone. Classroom-scale reviews find medium effects for quizzing on achievement; that is a much stronger evidence base than modality matching.

That is why practice quizzes, oral speak-and-grade, and spaced review sit at the center of the product - the review spine is not a side feature.
How adults learn
Adults bring experience, goals, and limited time. Andragogy (adult learning), as described by Knowles and later adult-learning texts, emphasizes relevance, autonomy, and problem-centered practice - which is why we organize around your exam materials, offer a comfortable modality on-ramp, and then coach adaptable study strategies on top.
Reading speed - an honest baseline
Many sites still quote ~300 words per minute as “average.” A large review of reading-rate studies finds typical silent reading of nonfiction closer to about 238 WPM.

If your pace is below that number, you are not “slow” - you are in a normal adult range. For many readers with dyslexia or ADHD, format matters as much as effort. That is why we invest in reading presentation modes (see Foundation essentials and Reading Check).
Dyslexia-friendly presentation
Research on letter spacing and crowding, plus practical style guidance, informs our dyslexia-oriented reading tools - spacing, line length, and optional fonts that reduce visual friction without claiming a cure.
We offer OpenDyslexic as an opt-in. A controlled comparison with elementary students identified as having dyslexia found no improvement in reading rate or accuracy versus Arial or Times New Roman. We keep the font available; we do not headline it as proven.

Attention, working memory, and focus reading
Dense walls of text tax working memory. Modes that present one word or one chunk at a time, highlight the current line, or hide chrome are designed to lower that load - especially useful when attention is hard to hold. We describe these as study accommodations, not as clinical treatment.
Focus mode uses RSVP (one word at a time). Some products cite a comprehension lift for ADHD readers. We have not independently verified that number, so we do not reprint it here.
Reading modes map
These are the modes that are live in Reading Check and the in-app reader. The table maps each mode to who it is for and the research we actually rely on - not a promised score gain.

Written exam ≠ oral board
Different exams demand different preparation. We keep written and oral materials and practice on separate tracks so you are not studying the wrong corpus for the test in front of you.
What we do not claim
